Chimney Repair
This project involved repairing an old chimney in an upstairs bedroom. A leak from the roof has caused extensive water damage to the full coat plaster that was covering this brick chimney.
Photo #1: You can see here that that the plaster has separated away from the brick interior, with cracks visible as well as several areas that are bulging.
Photo #2: I removed the damaged plaster and installed some plaster board in the deeper areas. The board was secured in place with construction adhesive and plaster washers and screws. I also put a corner bead on to give it a more finished look when the plaster is applied over it.
Photo #3: Here I mixed up base coat and embedded heavy fiberglass mesh over the entire surface. This was allowed to set up for about an hour.
Photo #4: You can see here that I followed this up immediately with a finish coat of smooth plaster.
The entire project took about six hours total from the time I started setting up until I gave it the final finish coat. This is a great example of what can be done with plaster. One of the nicest advantages is that I was able to do this work all in one visit. This house was way out there in the boondocks and I would have spent a lot of time and money coming back for a second visit, so it was great to do the whole project in one day. Another Plaster Victory!
