Photo #1: I was called in to a Post Office about two years ago. The outside wall was leaking over several years and had damaged this wall in the stairway leading down to the basement. This wall was originally covered with a wood panel, which was removed. It was now a matter of removing the water damaged plaster off the terra cotta tiles that the wall was made of. I allowed it to dry out overnight, putting a fan on it to help in the drying process.
Photo #2: The next day I returned and applied a latex bonder over the tiles and the entire wall area I was going to plaster. I gave the bonder about an hour to dry and then applied a coat of base coat over the wall. I let this set up about an hour and then applied another coat over this to build it out further. This was necessary, as the plaster I removed was about an inch thick. After I built the second coat of base coat out, I applied heavy fiberglass mesh into the plaster while it was still wet, and then allowed it to set for about two hours.
Photo #3: I came back after lunch and mixed up a smooth coat finish. This was applied in two thin coats, all at the same time. The first coat I skimmed on, then doubled back and filled it out for a nice thick smooth coat of finish over the entire wall. I then water troweled it and smoothed it out until there were no imperfections in the surface. The final troweling was done, and then a felt mop was used to do a final smoothing of the surface.
Photo #4: The entire project took about seven hours of time to complete, from the initial removal of the paneling on the first day, and then the work I did on the second day. It was allowed to dry for a week and then was painted. Another great project all the way!
